Stubby Rough: A Display Font for Bold Campaigns
Stubby Rough for Product Launch Graphics and Eye-Catching Branding
As I was finalizing the visual assets for a seasonal product launch, I reached for Stubby Rough — a display type family with 4 styles, inspired by the vernacular landscape. It was made for titles, headlines, packages, posters and much more. The font’s rugged yet refined character fit perfectly with the campaign’s earthy, artisanal vibe.
On my mobile preview, the headline "New Season, New Collection" stood out instantly. The bold strokes and subtle irregularities in the letterforms gave it an organic feel that resonated with the target audience. Stubby Rough didn’t just sit on the page — it commanded attention without being overwhelming.
Stubby Rough for Instagram Posts and Social Media Engagement
When designing a series of Instagram posts to promote the same product line, I experimented with different styles from the Stubby Rough family. The light weight worked well for captions and callouts, while the bold variant anchored the main headlines. Each post had a consistent visual rhythm, which helped reinforce brand recognition across the feed.
The font’s versatility allowed me to pair it with minimalist illustrations and high-contrast backgrounds. Even in small thumbnails, the text remained legible and impactful. I noticed that followers engaged more with posts that used Stubby Rough, likely because the font added a sense of authenticity and approachability.
For one post, I used the italic style to highlight a promotional tagline. The slant gave the text a dynamic energy, making it ideal for a limited-time offer. It felt like a natural extension of the brand’s voice — warm, inviting, and slightly unconventional.
Stubby Rough for YouTube Thumbnails and Video Content
Designing YouTube thumbnails can be tricky — you need to capture attention in a split second. For this campaign, I tested Stubby Rough against several other display fonts. The result? Stubby Rough delivered a strong first impression with its unique texture and clean edges.
I used the medium weight for the main title and paired it with a contrasting sans serif font for the subtitle. This combination created a clear visual hierarchy that worked well on both desktop and mobile screens. The thumbnail featuring “Crafted with Care” became one of the most clicked on in the series, suggesting that the font played a role in driving engagement.
The font also translated well into video overlays and animated banners. Its handcrafted appearance gave the content a tactile quality that felt refreshing compared to more sterile, modern typography choices.
Stubby Rough for Website Banners and Landing Page Headers
When building the landing page for the product launch, I needed a font that would stand out without overpowering the rest of the design. Stubby Rough fit the bill perfectly. The headline “Discover the Difference” was rendered in the bold style, creating a strong focal point that guided users’ eyes toward the call-to-action.
On smaller screens, I adjusted the font size and spacing to ensure readability. The font’s structure held up well even when scaled down, maintaining its distinctiveness without becoming cluttered. I also took advantage of the alternate characters included in the font family to add a subtle touch of personality to the subheadings.
For the email promotion linked from the landing page, I used a lighter variant of Stubby Rough to keep the tone friendly and approachable. It balanced the boldness of the main headline with a more relaxed feel, reinforcing the brand’s identity as both creative and trustworthy.
Stubby Rough for Packaging Design and Print Materials
Although the campaign was primarily digital, we also needed print materials for packaging and physical promotions. Stubby Rough proved to be an excellent choice for these formats as well. The font’s textured appearance translated well to paper, giving the packaging a handcrafted, artisanal look that aligned with the product’s positioning.
I used the regular weight for product names and the bold variant for key selling points. The contrast between the two styles helped establish a clear visual flow, making it easy for customers to scan and absorb the information quickly.
The font’s ability to work across both digital and print platforms made it a valuable asset for maintaining brand consistency throughout the campaign. Whether it was a social media graphic or a product box, Stubby Rough brought a cohesive and distinctive visual language to every touchpoint.
